A workspace you can come back to, without rearranging your Mac.
Most workspace tools want to own your desktop: move windows, create Spaces, save layouts. Canopy's workgroups do one smaller thing. They remember which windows belong to one piece of work, and bring them forward as a set.
Free through December 31 while the beta runs. No sign-in required. Launches January 1, 2027.

What a workgroup is
Name the windows that belong to one piece of work: a client, a project, a mood. Then treat them as one. Pick the group in the switcher and only its windows show. Let go of the key and the whole group comes forward, or keep cycling to land on one window. Hide every other app while you're in it, if you like.
Bring it back
Close a member and it doesn't vanish from the group; it shows as Restore. Press ↵ to reopen one, or ⌘ ↵ to reopen all of them: browser windows at their page, folders, documents, and the apps that weren't running yet. Groups survive closing and reopening windows, and they survive restarts.
Make them your way
Right-click any card to add it to a group, or start a new group from whatever is on screen. Canopy can also notice windows you keep switching between and suggest a group. Nothing is saved until you say yes.
What Canopy will never do
Canopy never moves a window, resizes one, or creates a Space. Your arrangement is yours. A workgroup is a list of windows Canopy knows how to find and bring forward, not a layout it imposes.
| What matters | Typical workspace tools | Canopy CMD |
|---|---|---|
| Groups windows by project | Yes, usually by saving a layout | Yes, by naming the windows |
| Moves and resizes windows | Yes | Never |
| Creates or switches Spaces | Often | Never |
| Reopens closed windows | Sometimes | Yes, at their page, file or folder |
| Visual switcher included | Rarely | That is the whole app |
The switcher underneath
Hold ⌥ Tab anywhere on your Mac, or ⌘ ` inside Safari. Canopy opens a clearing: every window from the apps in its roster, shown as a real snapshot, grouped by app and labeled with the page title, the file name, or the folder. Keep tapping to move the highlight, or just start typing to filter. Release the key and that window comes forward.
Minimized windows are in the grid too, dimmed and marked, because a window you tucked away is still a window you might need. Adobe documents that live as tabs inside one app window each get their own card. Safari profiles show as colored badges so Work and Personal stay obvious.
What it costs
Canopy is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and the app never stops working. At launch on January 1, 2027 it is $19.99 for one Mac or $29.99 for three, with a year of updates included and an optional renewal after that. There's a free tier that covers Safari and Finder forever. Until then the beta is free, and beta testers can lock in the founding price of $9.99 or $14.99 with lifetime updates. Workgroups are included with every paid license, and Safari and Finder windows can be grouped on the free tier too. Every purchase plants a tree.
Questions people ask
Does Canopy save window positions or layouts?
No. A workgroup remembers which windows belong together, not where they sit. Canopy never moves or resizes a window.
Does it use macOS Spaces?
No. Canopy never creates, switches or moves Spaces. Mission Control keeps that job.
What happens when I close a window in a group?
It stays in the group marked Restore. Press Return on it to reopen it at its page, file or folder, or Cmd-Return to reopen every closed member.
Can Canopy suggest groups?
Yes. It can notice windows you keep switching between and offer a group. Nothing is saved until you accept.
